The devastating Indian ocean tsunami was as high as 98 feet.
The one that just hit Japan has been estimated to be 13 feet.
Occurred just before midnight central time about 230 miles from Tokyo. At least 30 aftershocks (some up to 6.8). We need to focus on the northeast coast and response, looks like Tokyo is mostly alright outside of having their travel infrastructure totally halted. My heart goes out to the farmers’ whose land was destroyed and the people in Sendai.
As of 2:49AM – 8 killed.
As of 9:20AM – hundreds killed. Ugh.
President Obama will address the disaster during his scheduled press conference at approximately 11:00AM.
Expected tsunami heights on the U.S. West Coast: Morro Bay, 3.9 feet; Port San Luis Harbor, 7.1 feet; Pismo Beach, 2.4 feet; Santa Maria, 3.3 feet; Santa Barbara, 1.6 feet; Ventura, 2.9 feet; Malibu, 1.2 feet; Santa Monica, 2.8 feet; Redondo Beach, 2.1 feet; San Pedro Harbor, 1.3 feet; Huntington Beach, 2.3 feet.
